Drink: Wine Wednesday Review — The Original Dark Horse Big Red Blend

DARKHORSE BIG RED BLEND

The Original Dark Horse Big Red Blend
Malbec, Syrah, Tempranillo, and Merlot

Price: $7.99

One great thing about visiting Virginia is that the Trader Joe’s grocery stores sell beer and wine. So I make a point to make a wine run on my way back any time I visit.

For those of you that are new to my blog, I’ll let you in on in a secret. I like my wines to have some ‘junk in the trunk’. Junk in the trunk is a phrase I want to make an oenological term. It refers to a big red wine that is full-bodied — meaning it’s intense in flavor.

The Original Dark Horse Big Red Blend says it right on the bottle. It is a big red blend. Trader Joe’s Fearless Flyer says the wine is a blend of selected grapes from California, Australia, and Argentina.

This big red blend is an intense purple — almost black. The nose yields plums and blackberries. The palate has plenty of ripe black fruit with notes of chocolate. This wine is bigger than any $7.99 bottle of wine has a right to be. The Original Dark Horse Big Red Blend is a very good wine and a great value.
