DRINK: Paloma – It’s Like a Margarita…But Cheaper and Fizzy

Like most Americans, I like to celebrate Cinco de Mayo by drinking some tequila. Now, I can make a killer margarita. However the effort of making a proper margarita can sometimes take more energy than I have. Pride prevents me from using a pre-made mix…Well pride and the fact that they tend to be disgusting.

Enter the Paloma. I initially saw this recipe on Chow. The idea of good tequila, grapefruit soda, and fresh lime juice appealed to me. After some experimentation, I settled on using Grapefruit Izze sparkling juice for the soda. Since that product has no added sugar, I add a little agave nectar. Score! A fizzy margarita!

Paloma

1½ oz. 100% agave reposado tequila
Juice of half a lime
Grapefruit soda
Agave nectar to taste (optional)

Fill a glass with ice. Add tequila, lime juice, and (optional) agave nectar. Fill glass with grapefruit soda. Enjoy!

    • Hi Shirley! I usually buy Izze Sparkling Juice in grapefruit from the grocery store or Target. It is a combination of pink grapefruit juice and sparkling water. I usually add a little agave nectar since it is unsweetened. Atwater’s in Belvedere Square carries a similar product called Fizzy Lizzy. Trader Joe’s carries an Italian brand of grapefruit soda. I’ve also seen an American brand called Squirt . Fresca is a diet grapefruit soda that you can find in most grocery stores.
